The Promise of Dawn

The Promise of Dawn (Under Northern Skies) by Lauraine Snelling is Book 1 in the Under Northern Skies series.

Rune and Signe Carlson immigrate to America from Norway around the turn of the century after Rune's uncle offers to give them a loan for passage and land of their own. Once in Minnesota, the family finds itself faced with endless hard work in order to try to pay off their debt. Signe faces many challenges which cause her to question her faith in God as she struggles to create a home in the difficult environment.

Through the seemingly endless hard work Signe and her family face, readers are introduced to the way of life at that time. It is interesting to see how difficult it was to simply do daily chores. On top of the work, Signe is tasked with caring for the aunt, and the uncle and aunt are not pleasant to be around.

Signe and Rune deal with their new way of life with dignity and grace. The Promise of Dawn gives readers a glimpse into the isolation and difficulties people faced as they tamed the land at the turn of the century. As a historical account of early life in the north, this novel really delivers.

The publisher provided a review copy of The Promise of Dawn.
